La Isla

Directed by Ahmed Boulane
Morocco, 2015, 85 min.

Ibrahim, a low-ranking Moroccan soldier, is sent to Perejil, a deserted island off the Mediterranean coast of Morocco, to monitor the movements of smugglers and illegal immigrants with only his rooster as a companion. His loneliness is broken when he finds Mamadou, a Senegalese man, washed up on the beach after a failed attempt to reach Europe. Inadvertently, they trigger a diplomatic incident that crescendos into a regional military crisis. This satirical comedy is based on actual events between Morocco and Spain.

In French, Arabic and Spanish with English subtitles.
