Checks and Balances

Thursday Evening Documentary Film

Director Malek Bensmail embeds himself inside the daily workings of the famous dissident Algerian newspaper, Al Watan, that has historically been targeted by both the government and radical Islamic groups for its unflinching fight for press freedom. The film chronicles the paper’s coverage of the recent electoral campaign in which opposition politician Ali Benflis sought to replace Algeria’s longest-serving ruler, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, whose 17-year tenure is widely attributed to his party’s control of the country’s mass media. As press freedom in Algeria and around the world continues to be under threat, this film offers a glimpse into the debate, discussion and dissent that still persist.

In Arabic and French with English subtitles.
